22ND APRIL - 21ST MAY 2016
All Scene had the pleasure of working with the award-winning designer Tim Hatley on AN ENEMY OF THE PEOPLE, his excellent design of Henril Ibsen's revival written by Christopher Hampton and directed by Howard Davies. They have re-created Ibsen's thrilling play, a searing examination of the intricate workings of power and influence, and an investigation into who holds real authority in society.
"All our spiritual springsare poisoned and the whole of our society rests on the plague-infected soil of lies"
Brilliant Dr Stockmann, Chief Medical Officer of the Baths, has made a shocking discovery about the standards of sanitation at the popular local spa. Luckily technology has a ready solution: the polluted baths must close immediatly, so cleansing and rebuilding work can be carried out. But not everyone see things quite so simply. What about the impact of closure on tourism, property and commerce? What about the town's wider image and reputation?
Dr Stockmann's brother, the Mayor, has one drastic response. The local tradespeople and property owners have another. Now it is up to the liberal press. Dare they print the facts Dr Stockmann has uncovered, and let the public make up their own minds?
AN ENEMY OF THE PEOPLE will run at the Chichester Festival Theatre until Saturday 21st May 2016.

Sunday Times: 5 stars *****
'Hugh Bonneville is on superlative form as the campaigning Dr Stockmann in this exhilarating version of the Ibsen classic. Christopher Hampton's cunningly updated version, reminds us again that, for all his coldness and haughtiness, Ibsen is still one of the greats. Don't miss it.'
The Stage: 4 stars ****
"A potent production of Ibsen's ferocious moral drama driven by a star performance from Hugh Bonneville."
The Guardian: 4 stars ****
"Bonneville precisely captures the recklessness and egotism of Dr Stockmann in a vigorous production of Ibsen's frighteningly topical play."
Sunday Express: 4 stars ****
'Howard Davies dissects it all quite brilliantly in his superb revival. A wonderful start to the season.'
Daily Mail: 4 stars ****
Financial Times: 4 stars ****
'William Gaminara makes a dignified spider weaving his malevolent web. Adam James is the hard-edged newspaper editor, with Michael Fox as his absurdly revolutionary deputy and Jonathan Cullen adeptly finding the villainy beneath the humour as the pathologically "moderate" printer. Thrilling.'
