Designed by Soutra Gilmour.
"[Gilmour's] declamatory design...a strong palette of black, white and scarlet...is as sumptuous as the Alexander McQueen dress that swishes across the stage." Susannah Clapp, The Guardian.
[On the set design]: "...inside an open wooden frame that looks simultaneously like a four-poster bed and a coffin, the production is shaped by sex and death." Lucy Brooks, Culture Whisper.
All Scene worked on another production with The Jamie Lloyd Company, THE MAIDS. The workshop thoroughly enjoyed creating another exquisite design by Soutra Gilmour.
Jean Genet's classic French play THE MAIDS, is an intense drama seething with unique theatricality and brimming with intrigue. This brutal, psychological thriller is updated with a fresh new production written by Benedict Andrews and Andrew Upton, boasting three famous award-winning actors: Uzo Aduba (Orange is the Black), Zawe Ashton (Fresh Meat and the Donmar's 'Splendour') and Laura Carmichael (Downton Abbey).
Loosely based on real life sisters Lea and Christine Papin, who killed their employer in 1933, this notoriously vicious three-hander focuses on two increasingly sadomasochistic maids as they enact different ways in which they could murder their mistress. Expect a bold modern update, that expands themes of servitudes to fully resonate with contemporary issues and to probe issues of class, gender and the perverse distortions of relationships.
THE MAIDS will run at the Trafalgar Studios from 25th February until 21st May 2016. Previews start from the 20th February 2016. For more information and to book tickets, click here.
